A synonym is a word that means either exactly the same as, or very nearly the same as, another word in the same language. For example, “close” is a synonym of “shut”.
This essential book of synonyms has been created to specifically help children studying for the 11+ and SATs exams and will be beneficial to all children in Key stage 2 & 3.
Many children struggle matching synonyms. They often choose a word that is related in some way to the main word but it is not in fact a word that means the same or nearly the same. For example if the main word was “close” they may choose “door” because you close a door and therefore they must be similar meaning words. A vital part of our use of the English language is based around having knowledge and understanding of a variety of words and their meanings and working through this book will help to expand vocabulary. Research has constantly shown vocabulary size to be the best single predictor of language competence and exam success and our range of 11+ material has been designed with this in mind.
Synonyms play an important part in the 11+ (Durham CEM/GL Assessment) tests and the style of the book has been designed to make learning fun.
